Earth Day has been celebrated in the USA since 1970 and has grown to a global celebration of environmental awareness and sustainability in the past 50 years. Here at Quorn® Foods, we are committed to reducing human environmental impact through the reduced consumption of meat.
Three global issues are at the heart of everything we do:
- the growing world population
- the significant environmental impact of meat products
- major health issues with over consumption of meat.
Our origins go back to the 1960s, a period when there were genuine concerns about our ability to feed the world. After many years of research and development, Lord Rank and his team of scientists found a tiny member of the fungi family that converts carbohydrates into protein through fermentation. This led to the production of Quorn's mycoprotein, the unique ingredient that makes Quorn® products so special.
The environmental and health benefits of Quorn are extensive. The water footprint of Quorn is 15 times smaller than beef. Carbon emissions are 90% lower than beef and 30% lower than chicken. Our products have as much protein as eggs and as much fiber as broccoli with about half the calories and none of the cholesterol or saturated fat. You can also find more information here!
So this Earth Day, treat you and your family to a hearty meal that’s good to your body and even better to Mother Earth.
